Artists Profile

Arup Das

(1924 - 2004)

He was a prominent Indian figurative painter and muralist, celebrated for his exploration of human figures within the context of social, historical, and cultural environments. Born in West Bengal, Das honed his artistic skills at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. His work frequently places human figures at the centre of his compositions, conveying themes of humanity, spirituality, and hope.

Das is known for his innovative approach, effortlessly transitioning between mediums such as oils and watercolours. However, he truly excelled when combining multiple media, allowing for a dynamic interplay of textures and colours. His use of a wide variety of shades in his depictions of human forms gives his work a sense of vibrancy and depth, creating a blurred, mingled effect that invites multiple interpretations from the viewer.

A recurring motif in Das's art is the theme of the Messiah, symbolizing eternal hope and the promise of salvation for humankind. His canvases blend timeless ideas with a contemporary language, making his work both deeply rooted in tradition and relevant to modern times.

Arup Das's illustrious career saw him hold 22 solo exhibitions across the world, including in Japan, the UK, and Canada, and participate in numerous groups shows. His accolades include the prestigious National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and the President's Silver Plaque, both in 1957. Das’s works can be found in significant collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Sahitya Kala Parishad. He continued to influence the art world throughout his life until his passing in 2004.
