C.W. Toovey

(1891 - 1954)

He was a British artist known for his contributions to wood engraving and linocut printmaking. He was born in Berkhamsted, England, in 1891. His work in printmaking was notably recognized, and he was associated with the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, a prominent art school in London that focused on modern printmaking techniques.

Toovey was actively involved in the development of modern printmaking in the early 20th century and exhibited his work at the Redfern Gallery in London in 1931. His work was also featured in Claude Flight's influential 1934 book Lino Cutting and Printing, which highlighted the linocut technique.

The Grosvenor School, where Toovey was involved, included a group of talented artists such as Sybil Andrews, William Greengrass, Lill Tschudi, Dorrit Black, Pamela Drew, Guy Malet, and Cyril Power. Many of these artists contributed significantly to the development of modern printmaking in Britain.

Toovey's artistic legacy is marked by his role in the advancement of linocut and wood engraving, watercolour and he remain an important figure in the history of British modern art.
