K. G. Subramanyan

(1924 - 2016)

Kerala born artist K. G. Subramanyan was renowned for the sensuality of his imagery and figures, as well as his use of nocturnal settings and reflective expressions, Subramanyan's paintings showcased a lasting influence of cubism. As a contemporary of the progressive artists’ group, Subramanyan developed a distinctive approach to modern Indian art, drawing inspiration from myths, fables, and traditional narratives. Working across diverse mediums—from small terracotta sculptures to monumental murals—he depicted women, children, objects, and animals. In the 1960s, his focus shifted to still lifes, a phase that lasted until the 1970s, when he began exploring the terrace series. He was also a sculptor, a muralist, a poet, a theoretician, and an author of repute. He remained a prominent figure in the Indian art world.
