(1916 – 1994)

K. S. Kulkarni, born in Karnataka, was a highly influential figure in the Indian art scene, particularly known for his work in drawing and painting. He studied at the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay, where he honed his artistic skills and developed a strong foundation in fine arts. His career took off with his first one-man show in 1945, which was organized by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, marking the beginning of his public recognition.

In 1948, Kulkarni played a pivotal role in founding the Triveni Kala Sangam, an important cultural institution in New Delhi. His artistic journey was also enriched by his travels—most notably, in 1958, when he visited Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and Brazil. During this trip, he encountered the ancient civilizations of the Mayans and Incas, whose art and culture left a lasting influence on his own work, particularly in terms of symbolism and form.

His work during this period continued to evolve, integrating both Indian and international influences, blending traditional Indian art with modern techniques and ideas.
