Vasundhara Tiwari Broota

(B. 1955)

Vasundhara Tiwari Broota, born in 1955, is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist known for her exploration of the female body and the psycho-political dimensions of womanhood. Her work delves into the internal and external spaces of the female experience, using figurative painting to express complex psychological and emotional narratives.

Tiwari pursued her education in literature at the University of Delhi before studying at the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. Between 1982 and 1984, she worked under a cultural scholarship from the Government of India, which helped shape her artistic vision. She first gained attention for her mixed media work that portrayed the suppressed womanhood within societal structures, often using the female nude as a central motif. Her treatment of the female form is both abstract and symbolic, representing the inner life and struggles of contemporary women.

Her later works show a deeper sensitivity to the internal psychological spaces of the individual. Tiwari's art evolved to reflect a balance between the human figure and its environment, with both occupying equal visual importance in her compositions. Her work has been celebrated for its contemporary depiction of women, portraying them as strong and unafraid to reveal their inner selves while also participating in the rhythms of daily life.

Throughout her career, Tiwari has exhibited extensively, both in India and internationally, including solo shows in cities such as New Delhi, Chicago, Calcutta, and Bombay. Her participation in key exhibitions, including those organized by the Lalit Kala Akademi and the National Gallery of Modern Art, has earned her significant recognition. She has also received multiple awards, including the Silver Medal at the First International Biennial of Plastic Arts in Algiers in 1987, as well as several Delhi State Awards from the Sahitya Kala Parishad.

Her works are part of prestigious public and private collections, including those in the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco), and Bharat Bhavan (Bhopal), among others. Vasundhara Tiwari continues to live and work in New Delhi, contributing to the vibrant Indian contemporary art scene.
