Mill (1773-1836) was a Scottish philosopher, historian and economist, the father of John Stuart Mill. This influential history of the British in India, was first published in three volumes in 1817, then expanded to six volumes in Mill's lifetime. It is a scholarly and reasonably dry history, focussing on movements, ideas, battles, culture and customs rather than the more visceral individual human condition, but it fulfilled a thirst for knowledge of things Eastern in the 19th Century, and sold well enough to give Mill both some financial security and a position with the East India Company.
