Maharaja Nuncomar was an Indian tax collector in 18th century West Bengal who was tried and executed for forgery in a controversial trial. Sir Elijah Impey [1732-1809] was a British judge who served as the first chief justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal. Many accused Impey of judicial murder to protect the British Governor-General, Warren Hastings, from accusations of corruption. James Fitzjames Stephen examines the circumstances surrounding the trial and impeachment and their wider implications for British rule in India.
