This current lot belongs to Ompal's earlier phase, showcasing the figurative roots of his artistic journey before the transition to his celebrated tree abstractions.
After Ompal Sansanwal's Jiva exhibition at Bikaner House in 2024, he became renowned for capturing the magic and majesty of trees in his abstract works. However, looking back at his early phase from 2000 to 2006, his art took a different direction. During this period, he created narrative panels featuring more static figures and figurative elements. These figures seamlessly merged with the soft curves and lines of their geometric backgrounds, establishing a strong connection between the human form and abstract space.
This painting by Ompal Sansanwal captures attention with its quiet yet compelling presence. Five blue figures stand in silent communion against a backdrop of warm yellows and oranges, creating a delicate tension between the figures and their surroundings. Their subtle expressions hint at emotions or stories left untold, while thin red lines connect certain figures, suggesting unseen bonds. A chair with a vase rests to the left, grounding the composition in reality, but the figures remain the focal point. Their postures suggest movement, yet they remain frozen in time, inviting personal interpretation. Sansanwal blends figurative and abstract elements, with abstraction found in the surrounding space, colors, and fluid lines. The painting encourages viewers to explore the emotions between the figures and ponder the mystery behind their silent expressions.
