The artist believes in the two-dimensionality of painting, and prefers to work in a smaller format; one that he finds practical and well suited for his watercolours.
Present lot depicts three figures, two women and a man, with one of the women holding a bird, likely a Hamsa (swan or goose), in a basket. Narayan's style is characterized by simple outlines, accessible subject matter, and a narrative approach, often drawing from Indian mythology and folklore.
The Hamsa Jataka, a story from the Jataka tales, revolves around a golden goose (Bodhisattva) who is captured by a hunter, but his loyal friend Sumukha (Ananda) risks his own life to ensure the goose's freedom, highlighting the importance of loyalty and selflessness.
