Dutch Bengal School

Chaitnya Mahaprbhu with Group Dancing

Size: Image size: 25.1 x 19.4 inches, Frame size: 29.9 x 25.3 inches

In Original frame.
This painting depicts Ecstatic Sankirtana (Dancing) of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with his followers. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to dance and chant kirtan and remain engrossed. He was not concerned with the people of the material world.

The venerable Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with a group dancing and singing kirtanas/bhajans is an image that revels in the beauty of bhava and Bhakti. This oil on canvas is about the finesse and felicity of creating a group of human figures in realist idioms of perfection in tone and timbre.

The Bhakti Movement started from South India, by Alvaras and Nayanars. Alvaras are the devotees of Lord Vishnu and Nayanars are devotees of Lord Shiva. These devotees travelled to various places singing hymns in praise of their Gods.

Singer song writer
The world over, the image of the singer-songwriter has been a powerful one. Bards, who functioned as chroniclers and satirists mocking the meaningless conventions of their times, and who sometimes wrote and sang their verses, have featured in most world civilisations.

In India, the image of the singer-songwriter manifested itself in its fullest in what came to be known later as the Bhakti movement. Bhakti poets emphasised surrender to god. Equally, many of the Bhakti saints were rebels who chose to defy the currents of their time through their writings. The Bhakti tradition continues in a modified version even in the present day.

Hailing from both high and low castes, these Bhakti poets created a formidable body of literature that firmly established itself in the popular canon. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born in Bengal and considered the inspiration of Krishna consciousness.
Many followers believe that Lord Krishna Chaitanya is Krishna Himself in the garb of a devotee of Krishna, and therefore the versions of both Lord Krishna and Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are identical.

Sometimes the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself wonders how much transcendental pleasure is within Himself, and in order to taste His own potency, He sometimes takes the position of tasting Himself. Lord Chaitanya is Krishna Himself, the greatest of all in this group we note that the music is the thread that brings them together in a single bond while the rhythms propel them to dance.

Resplendent and resonant are their very actions and gestures, as they are lost in the hymns of praise that reach the innermost chambers of their hearts. Their bare chested bodies their vastras and their coloured dhotis are reflective of their simplicity and their deep devotion to Lord Krishna. Their posture and poise captured by the artists tells us that it is their song that is imperative and filled with adoration of the spirit.
