C C Banerjee's Bengal School Painting of Durga with Lion. Created in the style of the Durga Puja Pandal, superbly executed is the altarpiece of Durga that relates to the popular Durga Puja which became firmly established among the native princes and officials of Bengal during the government of Lord Cornwallis in British India. After the Hindu reformists conflated Durga with India, she became an icon for the Indian independence movement. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the tradition of Baroyari or community puja was popularized and became one of the most important festivals.

Bannerjee adds all the paraphernalia to the dressed up Durga. This painting clearly tells us that the worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has ancient roots, but the composition of the text Devi Mahatmya ("Glory of the Goddess") during the fifth to sixth century led to the dramatic transformation of the female principle into a Great goddess of cosmic powers.

For believers in Bengal and beyond, Durga is the cosmic Magna Mater, and this popular iconic type encapsulates the struggle between the goddess and the demon Mahishasura, who symbolises ignorance, disorder, chaos, and evil. Later textual sources generally refer to the subject as Mahishasuramardini, or "killer of the buffalo demon." She remains the most important and popular form of the great goddess known generically as Devi or Shakti.

This Durga is the goddess who is worshipped over the festival days and then taken for her visarjan. It is the many additions of decorations that become the festive motifs that create an aura of deep devotion and awe of the goddess who returns every year for the Puja season.
