Krishna Radha in Om

Signed by Artist in English

Size: 29.6 x 22.4 inches

When the alphabet of the word Om is recreated as one that stands like a sentinel for Lord Krishna and Radha it becomes a work of art that transcends time. This painting by an anonymous artists celebrates the union of Lord Krishna and Radha.

To remain still is one of the qualities that the Eastern philosophy teaches when facing the rapidly-changing world and we get an aura of stillness when we look at this work. The golden coloured Om is both soothing yet delicate. Behind its meticulous thoughts, which portray a discipline inherited from tradition, there are innovative and ingenious experiments in this painting that brings together the Radha Krishna sect.

We see that the artist creates a synergy by his seamless intertwining of tradition and the alphabet that stands for time eternal, both in his emotive evocations as well as his painting. Just after looking at it we feel like we are being introduced to divine fantasies on canvas and enchantment in the visual world. The visual richness comprises of colour and precise contours and bold strokes. We can gain multiple moments of silence through the pages, understanding the traditional aesthetics of both concept and imagery the kinetics of consciousness also come into play and you realise that silence is the source of his inspiration.

The lush foliage seen in the background created in impressionist strokes perfectly reflects the rich metaphoric prose of Jayadeva's Gita Govinda, giving visual form to Krishna and Radha's passion. While the depiction of the forest is perhaps lesser in detail and created more as a kingdom of hazy clouds and verdant trees, it is more freely depicted and employs a greater range of colours.

Krishna and Radha gaze into each other's eyes as the embrace within the arc of the Om alphabet. Their love is expressed by the multitude of suggestions, the poise and posture and gesture of Radha's hands and Krishna's gaze; the scent of flowering trees, and the intertwining of their bodies and garments. This quintessential Indian idea that nature echoes human passion is beautifully manifested in this work by this master who has successfully translated emotion into visual delight. The personification of the lovers Krishna and Radha was a popular pictorial theme not just in Bengal but also in other places in India like the Kota and other Rajasthani courts. The subject of Radha and Krishna relates to the poetry of the time and the ardent ethos of deep love that becomes divine.
