Shiva and Nandi is a gorgeous study of Siva with his Nandi who is happy to listen to his Lord and master. The bull Nandi, the vahana, or mount, of the god Shiva. is said to represent happiness and joy, as well as virility much like its associated deity.

Hindu gods have long been associated with their animal vahanas, likely since before the Common Era, with representations of both Shiva and Nandi and Durga and her lion appearing on Indo-Bactrian coins at the turn of the millennia. The proximity and the sense of comfort between man and animal is what creates a synergy of deep spirituality.

Nandis are very popular in later periods of south Indian sculptures, where monumental timber figures of vahanas were commonly carved for temporary use, and recreated after a few short years, likely due to the nature of the wood requiring extensive preservation in the south Indian climate. The figures often mirrored the style and material of 19th century south Indian painting from Tanjore, particularly the fixing of gemstones and glass within gilt bands and other areas decorated with gesso and paint. This Nandi painted in white sits listening to the music created by his Lord rapt in its spiritual fervour. The tones by Das are pale and opalescent both in the human figure and the bull.

Das creates a luscious Nandi who sits in robust grace and gravitas. The strength of the Nandi the 'vahana' or carrier of Shiva is the poise in posture as it looms in its own magnificence emblematic in form and fervour. The seated Nandi Bull is always to be found facing the shivalingam in places of worship. Nandi represents the creative energies of the restless mind brought under control by focusing on Shiva who is pure consciousness. Kneeling in reverence and worship, waiting to serve his Lord Shiva, the nandi is a symbol of purity and strength. This gentle Nandi radiates its own inner strength and a divine energy as it extols the life of devotion and solitude.
