Lady Within a Courtyard is typical scene of a lady in waiting in a courtyard with only a beautiful plant for company. Bandya was an artist of deep understanding of the choreography of the human narrative. In this case the lady is dressed up in a lehenga with her odhini and waiting. Bandya had a sense of observation that was born of meticulous observations of architectural design details as well as the texture and tone of buildings. Not only does he capture the marble and the sandstone but also the inlay work that suggests that it is a home of the wealthy.

He focusses on the lone lady who is the subject of the moment. She is caught in the spell of the Nayika who waits for her lover. This frame is suggestive of stories told the world over and the man and woman predicament of relationships that are as old as history and older perhaps than time. The colours used are rich and resonant, the divisions of the courtyard detailed in a perfection of perspective that the artists is happy to create and translate into a story of human desires.

Provenance: Collection of Gentleman.
