Kar, Chintamoni

Buddha with his Wife

Signed by Artist in Bangla

Size: Image size: 15.2 x 10.8 inches, Mount size: 21.5 x 16.7 inches

Gautam Buddha in meditation under the tree is an oft repeated image that takes us back to the awakening under the Bodhi Tree. What makes for great quality in a Buddhist painting is based on a number of things, including the stylistic modelling of the figure, the rarity of the subject, and the skill of the artist. The resultant esoteric forms, reflected in the diversity of Buddhist deities, and particularly represented in Tibetan-style Buddhism, offer countless avenues for study and appreciation. In this case the seated Buddha sits in the lotus position on a wooden tree trunk and is attired in saffron clothes, distinguishable features found in the present work include the distinct shape of the base, the mantle-like sash draped over the shoulders, and the almost square-shaped face with heavy-lidded eyes and a near horizontal brow that joins just below a spiral urna.

The treatment of the backdrop is abstract in the trees with the halo of the godhead and the accompanying atmospherics both being a pale golden colour to create the mood of absolute calm and serenity. The beauty of such a work lies in the response it evokes in the viewer, one of reverence and silence.

Provenance: Collection of Gentleman.
