A Crow

Suvaprasanna has painted crows for the past 40 years and he creates them in all moods and darkened shades of ebony. This study is one of playfulness and it echoes his love for the bird as well as his love for the Kolkata landscape. His lines are lithe and lean and they add a certain fervour of natural contours that add grace to his study.

Suvaprasanna is known for his wide range of subjects from human figures, to epics like the Mahabharata his cityscapes and his sweeping view of gauntly-shaped high-rise buildings growing out of a sprawling shanty town. But his bird series have always been a part of all his exhibitions. This is a remarkably real depiction of the crow in the Calcutta skyline. The density of the feathered body and the unusual beak down moment all have about it a certain vitality that can belong only to a master. The string like twig in its beak adds to the tensile nature of the frozen frame of the bird sitting in graceful poise and bringing alive beautiful verses by Rabindranath Tagore who wrote poetry that had so many references to the beauty of birds on earth.
