Early work, done while a student at Calcutta Collage of Art.

Sanjay Bhattacharyya was one of Bikash Bhattacharjee's greatest students at Govt. College of Arts Kolkata from where he finished his masters as Gold Medallist. Bhattacharyya is known for his fluidity and mastery of water colours of both landscapes and streetscapes. This fragment of a minaret from a monument with trees flanking both sides is done in the impressionist style and is one of his older works perhaps done more than 3 decades ago when he was a college student.

His love for the study of the view comes from his early love for Daniells and other British watercolorists. Perspective and perception are both his allies. His brusque swift wispy strokes create their own tints of shades and shadows along with his minimalist moorings of both realism as well as abstraction. Colour for Bhattacharyya was about light and shading. The figures have their own grace in the scene.

This work marks a significant signature of his early style, so strongly influenced by European watercolorists, as well as his love towards the techniques, compositions and subjects which would shape his later work. A number of works in early years included the motif of a small building or a group of figures. The present work focusses entirely on the fragment of history of the minaret, and the two trees with lush leaves, along with figures in the distance. It is also perhaps the finest of this type of study, executed predominantly in subtle green and grey shades, to include soft, tonal coloured nuances, notably a slight pale sky. Groups of trees, people and architectural vignettes, are subjects in landscapes, which would occupy Bhattacharyya all throughout his life. He stands today amongst the finest watercolorists in the country and follows in the footsteps of his great mentor Bikash Bhattacharjee who loved taking them on field trips to do spontaneous sketches and watercolours.
