Biren De, Puri May 1951

The Beach Landscape by Biren De created in 1951 portrays his love for the sea and the gradients of atmospherics.This dramatic watercolour , showing the strong glow of the early evening sun in summer, with threatening storm clouds could best be described as a summer cvening by a stormy beach. This beach in Puri tells us that De loved studying the atmospherics, he was a lover of light. De’s deeper meditation on earth’s energies would follow in the next decade.

The low horizon and the magnificent beach views provided the perfect stage for sketching both skies and sands, with their dramatic effects of light and the endlessly mutating cloud formations. In this sparse watercolour we can sense his preference for abstraction and subliminal strokes that afforded both a rural landscape for painting and the convenience of proximity to Puri where he loved studying the lay of the land in different types of weather conditions. This watercolour is an early study of one of India’s finest abstractionists, who never lost the opportunity to study the effect of changing weather on the clouds and the skies when he visited to capture on his sheets of paper.
