Shah Jahan gazing at Taj Mahal

Size: Image size: 8.9 x 6.8 inches, Mount size: 13.5 x 11.4 inches, Frame size: 14.5 x 12.4 inches

This anonymous work has been created in the old Bengal School academic style, as a romantic realist portrait of Shah Jahan gazing at the Taj Mahal that he built as a monument for Mumtaz Mahal.

The portraits of the King and Queen His daughter Jahanara Begum in the foreground gazing at the mausoleum have its own beauty. This is one study showing the great monument in a dream like sequence and perhaps in the haze of a grey sky. The viewpoint is shifted slightly in the scene but it explores the play of light on the marble dome and is 'among the most poetic representations of the king looking at the Taj in heartbroken sadness while his queen’s image flanks his face. The study of Moghul architecture too is amply illustrated the inner pillars and palatial detailing.

The attire and the royalty is clear and distinct, the subtlety in tonal variation so evident here is characteristic of the artist who belongs to the Bengal tradition who appreciates and adopts the palette and style of European picturesque painting.
