Military career of Henry Havelock, 1795-1857, a British general, who entered the army in 1815 at 19, and saw considerable action. This included the first Burma War (1824-26), first Afghan War (1839), the Sikh Wars (1843-49). During the Indian Mutiny, (1857) Havelock recaptured Cawnpore from the rebels, too late to prevent the massacre. He relieved Lucknow from siege, but the rescuers were themselves besieged. He died a few days after the relief of the city. Great interest re the Indian Mutiny etc., 1957.
