Charles Caraccioli, Gent

The Life of Robert Lord Clive, Baron Plassey

Size: 25.9 x 20.4 cm (10 x 8 inches)

wherein are impartially delineated his military talents in the field; his maxims of government in the cabinet, during the two last wars in the East Indies, which made him Arbiter of Empire, and the richest subject in Europe, WITH anecdotes of his private life, and the particular circumstances of his death, Also a narrative of all the last transactions in India.
Only Volume 1 out of 4 Volume set.
Printed and sold by T. Bell, pp. 562 with a portrait of Clive facing the half-title and a large folding mape of India facing p. 277.
The first biography Robert Clive [1725-1774] published only 3 years after his suicide. Described as a highly scurrilous biography written, evidently, under a pseudonym describing in detail the corruption and sexual peccadilloes of Clive and his coterie.
Though it is only Volume 1 of 4 volumes, its 562 pages carry a lot of detail about his early career. While the title-page does not mention the volume number, the last page says it is Volume 1.

CONDITION: Bound in 18th-century marbled boards with leather spine. Binding worn, upper cover nearly detached, but the text block is tight and sound. No markings. Even stray volumes of this work are rare.
