Devi Prasad Roy Choudhury was one of the most renowned artists and art administrators of the twentieth century. He got his art knowledge from an Italian painter, Voiess, during the initial years of his career and later he became a disciple of Abanindranath Tagore. Initially he worked as a painter and later found his interest in working with bronze and learned sculpture techniques from artist, Hiron Moy Chowdhury. He was the first modern artist from Bengal who worked with bronze and the 'Triumph of Labour' in Delhi is one of his well-known masterpieces. He was the director of the States School of Arts and Craft, Madras from 1928-1958 and President of the National Academy of Art from the year 1954-1960.

Two Ladies is a work that reflects his love and understanding of anatomical perfection in the human figure. His learning was formed based on the Italian Renaissance artists who became anatomists by necessity, as they attempted to refine a more lifelike, sculptural portrayal of the human figure. For him the portrayal of the human figure was also about material and function in the moment of translation.

In this image two ladies are in rapt conversation. Choudhury showed the classical treatment of the body rendered in dynamic poses rendering the natural expression as well as perfection in facial features. The two ladies and their attire created in sinuous folds of soothing tranquility as well as a socio cultural context create a conversation that is framed in its own context of silent pauses and deep thoughts. The idealised female form becomes both the subject and the study of deep dialogues. The shades of the sarees one dark and one light in the older and younger ladies creates a contrast of setting tones. The background of the home too has its own lacing of inner dictates and styles of the period he created it. Choudhury was one of the greatest pedagogues the country ever knew. As a sculptor his sculptures are public works of art sculpted in the tenor of deep human values of expression and compassion and the narrative of India's freedom struggle.
