India's greatest figurative master who creates works on paper that are epic in every way and extol the beauty of grammar and the lexicon of studying the human faces as well as human figures. Jogen Chowdhury's Face Study is a marvel in cross hatch and emotive expression. Pen and ink and watercolour have been his favourite materials for the past 6 decades.
The portrait is monochromatic black and white he adds colour only to the upper and lower lips. What is intriguing is the commentary he adds-by adding a soft hued yellow to the inner sight of the crooked teeth as if there is turmoil within the mouth of the individual. Indeed the reflection is an imaginative colour tone; it brings home the idea of fantasy in the mind of the subject and adding the tenor of trauma.
In Jogen Chowdhury's drawing, of the sculpted face with neat contours, we note a sculpted identity in which numerous cross hatched strokes of contouring are undertaken to provide new meaning, to illuminate the facial form in a different way, and to show different relationships within the observed world. For Chowdhury modernism rejected traditions that existed in the nineteenth century and sought to stretch the boundaries to find a new distinct language.
Chowdhury, creates his facial forms with a dazzling, visual and thematic complexity. Expressionist elements surge, his detailing of the neck, and shoulder and the finely attuned attention to the frontal visage all add to a charisma that churns moments of moody edits. When asked about his innate felicity with pen and ink and pastel, Chowdhury said to me in an interview: At Shantiniketan I was introduced to ink and pastel by Gopal Ghose-within the Bengal Gharana of moderns he was the Abstract Expressionist. As a matter of fact, it was from him that I got the idea of creating contemporary works in this medium. But the imaginative came into my work after college.
