In the present lot, Bendre has used bright yellow, greens and red with warm whites and brown to depict celebration of 'Rungo Utssav' of Festival of colours by the villagers in the mountain landscape. The vibrantly attired locals which can be seen singing and dancing in the foreground disappearing into the foothill in the background. The spring season and its atmospheric reality is well observed and captured through this work. The respect for the flat area on which to paint, the use of conceptual images understandable to the people at large, based on observation and memory, have been characteristic of Indian art.
Bendre lived in Nainital and the present work is from his Nainital series.
