Gandhi visited the town after accepting an invitation from the mill-owning Davies family during his visit to London for the second-round table conference. The mill owners thought that they will convince Gandhi to back out from Swadeshi Movement after showing him that how the hardship being suffered by the East Lancashire textile industry, which had been decimated by the Indian independence movement's boycott of British goods.
