This rare engraving has numerous Indian pictorial references: John Bull and a turbaned Indian stand at right staring at each other, an elephant procession and a palanquin in the distance across the river, the dog eating Pullaw [an Indian rice dish], a jar of curry powder, bales of Chintz, Muslins and Nankeens etc., the personification of the East India Company lying distressed on the left holding the Cha[r]ter due for renewal. Next to the turbanned Indian lies, on the ground, a roll of paper which reads: 'Proofs of utility of E.I.C. debts ?3,000,000, loss to the public

?16,000,000,000 gain to the company 10 per Cent'. Commercial Liberty personified by a young woman lies in a large chest, holding a caduceus.

BACKGROUND:
When the East India Company Charter came up for renewal in 1813, there were vigorous attempts to end its commercial monopoly of India and China. Eventually the Charter Act of 1813 passed by Parliament continued the EICo. rule but ended its commercial monopoly, except for the tea and opium and the trade with China. The caricature brings out the struggle between the pro- and anti-monopoly factions before the bill was passed.
