Size: 36.5 x 27.5 cm (14.3 x 10.7 inches)

First edition, 4to., pp XIX+ 248, with portraits, pictures, maps and plans, original blue cloth binding with extensive gilt decoration on front cover and spine with coat of arms, ornate decorations and title in gilt on front cover and spine, beveled edges. With 26 mounted Woodbury Types mostly after photos by Bourne and Shepherd.

Excellent copy.

Frontispiece is a photograph of Queen Victoria. Other photographs include studio portraits of the Queen, Lord Lytton, and eleven Indian rulers: rulers of Nepal, Hyderabad, Baroda, Mysore, Gwalior, Indore, Udaipur, Bhopal, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kashmir; a group of the Khan of Khelat with Chiefs and Ministers; seven views of historical remains in Delhi; and five of scenes at the Durbar at which Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India. The original photographs, with some exceptions (not stated which ones), were taken by Messrs Bourne and Shepherd' (Wheeler 1877,p.vi. ). The photographs of the Indian Princes and architecture by the firm of Bourne and Shepherd are extremely rare. The photographs themselves are beautiful, rich with excellent tonality and contrast.

A very handsomely produced account of this important landmark event in Indian and Imperial history.
