Griggs, W. & Birdwood, George Christopher Molesworth.

Indian Art at Marlborough House and Sandringham.

A Catalogue of the Collection of Indian Arms and Objects of Art presented by the Princes and Nobles of India. Illustrated in Collotype, and Photo-Chrono-Lithograph

Year: 1892

Size: 38 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inches).

Published by W. Griggs & Sons, 1892. First edition, Folio, Coloured frontispiece of Prince of Wales' arms, 2 plates of royal pedigrees of England and Denmark, printed photo portraits of Prince and Princess of Wales, coloured plate of Marborough House and 4 monochrome plates of rooms there showing collections of Indian arms and armour, coloured plate of Sandringham, 4 plates of room views with arms [one coloured], 15 further plates of artefacts and edged weapons [12 in colour]. 11pp prelims and introduction. Original chromolitho coloured pictorial boards hardcover binding. Fine condition W Griggs (illustrator).

A lavishly produced work produced in response to requests for photographs from many of the Ruling Princes of India who had presented the Prince of Wales with many of these weapons and artefacts during his visit to India in the 1870s. That is probably the reason why the book is seldom encountered in England. These objects were displayed around the UK and in Paris after the Prince's return from India and at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886 before finally being displayed in these two residences. Those at Marlborough House were removed some years ago.
