Emily Eden, sister of the then Governor General Lord Auckland. She had a unique opportunity to draw the people of India when she and her sister, Fanny, accompanied their brother on his long tour up-country from Calcutta to meet Ranjit Singh, ruler of Punjab. The Tour lasted from 1837 to 1840. Her water colours were lithographed by Lowes Dickson and published by J. Dickinson in 1844 entitled 'Princes and People on India'. She had a unique opportunity when Ranjit Singh gave her a personal sitting for making his portrait.

Most of the women going to India had received instructions in water color drawing and many were highly skilled, Aristocratic Emily Eden was outstanding among them.
