The Bhor (or Bhore) Ghat is the northern part of today's Maharashtra state. It has always been the main pass over the Western Ghats and the means of communication between sea-coast and the Deccan. Bhor was a native state of India, in the Poona Political Agency, and situated among the higher peaks of the Western Ghats. Grindlay observed that early in the day as the sun rose was the best time to see the mountains as then their gigantic pinnacles appeared through the receding mist.
