Hardcover in original cream-colored pictorial boards imprinted with the image of three soldiers and a horse in red color. Binding is solid and interior pages are clean.

Thirty-one full-page color plates of Charlton's uniformed men(This contains 12 coloured prints of Indian army Officers (Viceroy's Body Guard, 3rd Lancers, 2nd Bengal Lancers, 1st Bombay lancers, 17th Bengal Cavalry, 7th Bombay Lancers, 4th Bengal Cavalry, 8th Bengal Cavalry, Central India Horse, , 5th Punjab Cavalry, 6th Bombay Cavalry, 7th Bengal Cavalry. There are about a dozen other illustrations of British troops. The size of the plate is 10 ins x 14 ins.), with literary contributions by Harold Begbie, Walter Besant, Guy Boothby, F.C. Burnand, and John Strange Winter. Charlton ranks as one of Britain's preeminent "battle" painters of the late Victorian era.
