This is a wonderful traditional winter scene of a mid-19th century village in the Dutch country side. The composition is full of fun and classic winter activity including towns people sledding on the lake which has now frozen. While it is the winter time artist bring some drama into the picture with a light and shadow colour treatment of yellow and grey. In the far background of the painting a windmill is visible which is a common depiction for the Dutch country side.
The striking image of barren trees with branches against dramatic sky. The scene evokes feelings of solitude and resilience. The haziness present in the work creates a dreamlike atmosphere.
