GAUR AND NITAI - CHAITANYA MAHAPRABHU

No Date but Similer Paintings were made in Circa 1900

Image size: 83 x 61.6 cm (32.6 x 24.2 inches)
Frame size: 104.5 x 82.6 cm (41 x 32.5 inches)

The art work shows duo of Gaur the orange dressed figure and Nitai the green dressed figure, he who embodies eternal bliss. Gaur, known as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, is belived by his followers to be an incarnation of God Krishna. Nitai is believed to be an avtar of Balarama and therefore, the brother and friend Krishna.
They are depicted here as temple icons standing on lotous with hands raised, chanting a devotional song or performing Bhakti Yoga. The dark background highlighted these colorfully dressed figures with minimal accessories like three layered garlands and one sided sting (known as yegyopavit, typically worn by Brahmans). Stylistic features of this work seems to inspired by Kalighat painting.
