A BENGALI GENTLEMEN

No Date but Similer Paintings were made in Circa 1900

Image size: 57.5 x 42.4 cm (22.6 x 16.6 inches)
Mount size: 75.8 x 58 cm (29.8 x 22.8 inches)

This is a portrait painting of a Bengali man. He is shown seated in a European style wooden chair with a book, he seems to be lost in some thought by looking upwards and left hand on his face. His turban is of a sort that was considered fashionable in Bengal during the 19th century. The setting shown here is done in very typical western academic style, by placing a royal blue velvet curtain at left, mosaic flooring and elaborately carved Victorian style furniture.
The colour palette used by the artist is full of rich and dark colours including brown, royal blue, light gold and green.
The subject of our portrait is luxuriously dressed and finely jeweled, there is little offered here to point towards his identity. Bengali renaissance leaders Ram Mohan Roy and Dwarkanath come to mind, however, in the absence of any inscription, one cannot be sure.
