Hemen Mazumdar is known for his paintings of women, whom he painted in diaphanous clothes. The figure of the woman is laden with nuanced eroticism. The painting shows partially dressed woman which is romanticize from the artists treatment of skin tone, texture of textiles and hair and subtly suggestive pose. Her forlorn stance endears the viewer to her melancholy.
The painting also shows Majumdars deft handling of watercolors to achieve an ethereal effect. At the same time, one cannot completely deny that Majumdar has kept the male gaze in mind. This painting exemplifies his mastery over the European academic style and successfully adapted it to his Indian subject matter, basically its combines elements of Western Classicism with Indian tradition.
