Capt. Grindlay was a man with various talents for whom th pen, pencil or sword came alike. He is better known as the founder of ANZ Grindlays Bank. He came to India in 1803 and joined the Seventh Bombay Native Infantry. His appoinment enabled him to travel widely in the Western regions of India where he made these drawings. His talent for recording the life and landscape of India is evident from the images in the present work. On his return to Britain in 1820 he was persuaded to work on the production of the present work. In 1820 Rudolph Ackermann's firm started publishing a book entitled 'Scenery Costumes and Architecture, Chiefly on the Western side of India'. The book contained thirty six highly finished aquatint plates in six parts. The first two parts were published by Ackermann and the remaining four parts were published by Smith. Elder Co. This work was published between 1826 to 1830. This is said to be the most important colour plate book on India after the Daniells.
