Lieutenant-Colonel James Todd (1782-1835), a British Colonel and Indian Diplomat, historian of Rajasthan and numismatist came to India as a cadet in the Bengal army of the British East India Company in 1799. He was attached to the escort sent with Graeme Mercer, envoy and resident at Sindhias Court in 1805. He commanded the escort Sindhias from 1812 to 1817. In 1815 he submitted a map to the governor, Lord Hastings, in which for the first time the term Central India was applied to the collection of native states now under the Central India agency. Rajputana was also included in the area of his researches. In the latter year he was in charge of the Intelligence Department, which largely contributed to the break up of the Maratha Confederacy in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and was of great assistance in the campaign in Rajputana. In 1818 he was appointed political agent for the states of western Rajputana, where he conciliated the chieftains and settled their mutual feuds. In 1822 his health began to fail and he was forced to leave India for England. He returned to England in 1823 with a wealth of material collected during his time in India, which was to form his foundational study of Rajasthan's historical development.
