HENDLEY, T. H.

ASIAN CARPETS: XVI AND XVII CENTURY DESIGNS FROM THE JAIPUR PALACES, &C.

Year: 1905

Size: 51.5 x 37.5 cm (20.3 x 14.7 inches)

Published by: W. Griggs. 1905.

Thick elephant folio (380 x 510 mm), Splendid folio of Oriental carpets patterns, with additional decorative title page, 20pp (text)

158 (150 patterns in color) full page chromo lithographed plates (except plate CI, which is a collotype), mostly on textured paper, 7 plain key plates, text within chromo lithographed border, heightened in gold, plate are arranged in six parts, each containing 25 plates. In addition are an old map and several reproductions of title pages and illuminated borders from Persian books, one of which, a 16th century Persian design, is used for the enrichment of the pages of the text.

Later cloth portfolio, title in gilt on spine.

Originally issued in six parts in portfolio, with 25 plates each, this superb collection of full-sized carpet patterns was produced from the original carpets (as indicated at verso of title, many of these patterns) by draftsmen in Jaipur, with the permission of Maharaja Sewai Madho Singh, under the supervision of Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob, who collaborated with Thomas Hendley on a number of similar antiquarian projects. Included is a section on the famous Ardebil carpet in the Indian Museum, and a section on Persian and Turkish carpets, with special attention to differences between the two in design and workmanship. The 20 pages of textual explanation are surrounded by ornate chromolithographic ornamental borders. Double-page plates are numbered as two.

The first four parts of the work are devoted to the Jaipur carpets. The fifth is reserved for the famous Ardebil carpet, which is now one of the glories of the Indian Museum; and the last part contains, in addition to Persian carpets, a few from Turkey, which have been included to illustrate some of the main differences in design and workmanship between them and the Persian examples. (p. 15). There are 7 b/w descriptive key plates which explain the design and the identity of carpet style.
