Double-page woodcut map of India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. On the reverse, geographical details written in Latin and the interesting trace of Baroque typography with decorative motifs. Trapezoidal projection in Ptolemaic format.

The first modern atlas, prepared by Martin Waldseemuller using the translation of Mathias Ringmann. In 1520, a second edition of the atlas was printed by Scott from the same woodcut blocks. It was reissued in 1522 and 1525 by Fries with size reduced maps.
This particular map is the fourth printing of the woodcut maps in 1541.

Laurent Fries (1485–1532)
Lorenz Fries, known as Laurent Fries, was born in Mulhouse, Alsace, in about 1490. He studied medicine at the universities of Pavia, Piacenza, and Montpellier and then established himself as a physician in the Alsace region and Switzerland, before eventually settling in Strasbourg in about 1519. There he met the printer and publisher Johann Grüninger, who worked with the Saint-Dié group of scholars, which included Walter Lud, Martin Ringmann, and Martin Waldseemüller. Grüninger printed several maps prepared by Waldseemüller and supervised the cutting of the woodblocks for his 1513 edition of Ptolemy’s geography.
Lorenz Fries’ first venture into mapmaking was in 1520, when he executed a reduction of Martin Waldseemüller’s wall-map of the world, first published in 1507, possibly as a response to Waldseemuller’s recent death.
