Rarest of the Thomson series. This is an 1817 map of India by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson and was published in the New General Atlas.
It depicts the whole of India from Lahore to the Isle of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Numerous cities, towns, rivers, mountains, and beautifully depicted deserts are noted throughout. This map's magnificent size, beautiful colour, and high detail make this one of the finest maps of this region to appear in the early 19th century.
This map was issued at the outset of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, which consolidated British colonial power in India.
