RUDYARD KIPLING
RUDYARD KIPLING SIGNED LETTER
Size: 11.5 x 9 cm (4.5 x 3.5 inches)Autograph letter signed “Rudyard Kipling”, a two-sided, handwritten, and fully signed letter from the acclaimed author Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). Born in India to British parents, Kipling attended boarding school in England before returning to India in 1882 to work as a journalist. His verses and satirical writings quickly gained him a substantial following in England, where he returned in 1889. Kipling’s poetry achieved widespread acclaim, including the iconic poem If. He attained global fame with his classic The Jungle Book series (1894–1895) and later published Kim in 1901, followed by the much-loved Just So Stories in 1902. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In this letter, Kipling writes to a correspondent named Brindley, thanking them for sharing the title of a work on church architecture. He notes, “I hadn’t come across it before and shall now dig into the _ library in search of it.” He continues, “our weather is foul, and already I prefer to think of Engelberg with longings” (referring to the Swiss ski resort Kipling visited in 1912, indicating that the letter was written after that year). The letter is signed, “Very sincerely yours, Rudyard Kipling.”
This lovely, highly collectible piece is written on both sides of a heavy-stock card bearing the letterhead of Kipling’s residence, Bateman’s in Burwash, Sussex, where he lived from 1902 until his death in 1936. The local railway station, Etchingham, is also noted.
An exceptional literary autograph from one of the most celebrated authors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
