Lane, Edward William

An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians.

Size: 15.5 x 23 cm (6.1 x 9 inches)

Written in Egypt during the years 1833 -34 and 35.
3rd Edition. 2 volumes complete, f/o maps, 3rd edn with large additions and improvements which greatly enhance Lane's analysis of contemporary Egypt, with respectively 61 and 67 illustrations from drawings, 8vo., pp. xxiv, 472, viii, 450, pp + extensive index, Publishers cloth later re-backing, title in gilt on spine.

"A description of life in Cairo during the first half of the nineteenth century, this classic work is of utmost significance to the anthropologist. After being trained in Arabic language and literature, Lane took up residence in Cairo, where he lived for several years as a native. His data were acquired according to such typical modern anthropological techniques as the use of the native language and participant observation. While Lane was not a professional anthropologist, his book is, in fact, a remarkably comprehensive and objective ethnography of Cairo. It ranks along with the works of Hamed Ammar, Ayrout, Berque, and Blackman as the best in Egyptian ethnography. An account of the manners and customs of the modern Egyptians focuses on the Muslim community, although there are short supplements on the Copts and Jews of the city."

Great book covering a wide area of subjects: music, magic, public dancers, the bath, serpent charmers, laws, government, domestic life, etc., Chares Knight, London, 1842.
