HOMANN, JOHANN BAPTIST

ASIAE RECENTISSIMA DELINEATIO, QUA STATUS ET IMPERIA TOTIUS ORIENTIS UNACUM ORIENTALIBUS INDIIS EXHIBENTUR

A RECENT SKETCH OF ASIA, SHOWING THE STATES AND EMPIRES OF THE WHOLE EAST, TOGETHER WITH THE EAST INDIES

Folded Map

Year: 1720

Size: 60.8 x 62 cm (23.9 x 24.4 inches)

Excellent example of Homann's first map of Asia, extending from the Mediterranean to the Pacific and including parts of Nova Hollandia, Carpentaria, Nova Britannia, and the Marianas, along with a nice incomplete version of the mythical Compagnie Land, north of Japan. Includes privilege.
The map is a wonderful example of Baroque style. The title cartouche shows an Asian potentate pointing his sceptre at three subjects, who bow on their hands and knees before him.
This edition of the map excludes an ornate second cartouche in the upper right corner of the map, which can be seen in early editions.
