CHRISTOPH WEIGEL
ASIAN MAP
Year: Circa 1720sSize: 48.1 x 38.4 cm (18.9 x 15.1 inches)
This map is from Christoph Weigel's first edition atlas titled Descriptio Orbis Antiqui in XLIV Tabulis Exhibita of the Ancient World, published in Nuremberg in the 1720s.
An intriguing map of Asia derived from pre-Columbian travellers' accounts. Japan, China, and Southeast Asia are treated curiously, and the Korean Peninsula is absent. The work focuses on the Eastern Hemisphere alone, with special attention paid to the lands occupied by the Greek and Roman Empires. With a focus on ornamental title cartouches embellished with numerical elements—coins and medallions that symbolise the area and its rich classical past—the map is meticulously etched and skilfully coloured by hand.
Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725)
He was an engraver and publisher active in Nuremberg in the early 1700s. During his lifetime he published 70 books and series of engravings, including the atlas Descriptio Orbis Antique in XLIV tabulis published in 1720. For his geographical works and maps, he worked closely together with the highly successful Nuremberg cartographer Johann Baptist Homann. His younger brother, Johann Christoph Weigel (1661-1726), also known as Christoph Weigel the Younger, worked as an engraver and publisher in Nuremberg. Weigel's company was continued by his wife when he died in 1725.
