Sanjay Bhattacharya

(-)

Sanjay Bhattacharyya was one of Bikash Bhattacharjee's greatest students at Govt. College of Arts Kolkata from where he finished his masters as Gold Medallist. Bhattacharyya is known for his fluidity and mastery of water colours of both landscapes and streetscapes. This fragment of a minaret from a monument with trees flanking both sides is done in the impressionist style and is one of his older works perhaps done more than 3 decades ago when he was a college student.

His love for the study of the view comes from his early love for Daniells and other British watercolorists. Perspective and perception are both his allies. His brusque swift wispy strokes create their own tints of shades and shadows along with his minimalist moorings of both realism as well as abstraction. Colour for Bhattacharyya was about light and shading. The figures have their own grace in the scene.
